Congratulations!

Well done to our fellow Toruń friends Stacey Kemp and David King (the British number 1 ice skating pair) who recently did well in SKATE AMERICA in Lake Placid, USA. They are now off to England to take part in the British Championships...and then next year will be representing Britain at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The Huddling Cherubs

Even after many years being here in Toruń...it never ceases to amaze me how many new little quirks I keep finding around town. Certainly, running TORUŃ DAILY PHOTO has helped me to enrich my eye for detail.

These little cherubs are one such example. Huddling together high above the Vero Moda fashion shop in the old town. Bet they've seen a fair share of history!

Fire?!

Unfortunately, the tenement houses in Toruń's Old Town are so closely built together and the electrical wiring is usually quite old that fires can be quite common. Last night there was a scare when 2 fire engines turned up at one flat...causing a crowd to gather. You can just make out the hoses as the firemen tried to put out what was most likely a minor fire. There was no sign of the ambulance crew so luckily no one was injured. Sadly, a few weeks ago a person died due to a devastating fire here in the Old Town.

American Day

Yesterday, I organised a special American Day for SPEAK UP - one of the many private language schools here in Toruń. We all piled into a local American diner where we enjoyed an interactive presentation by an American teacher. Afterwards we enjoyed delicious burgers before moving onto a local cafe to be taught how to make the quintesential American dessert - Pumpkin Pie! A unique and fun afternoon for all!

Swine Flu Warning

Swine Flu is once again gripping the news...and here in Poland everyone is talking about it (Ukraine has had it bad...and just today a Polish guy died from it in Gdansk). This poster issued by Veolia Transport is displayed on all the local buses. It instructs the public on how to prevent spreading the bug.

Simply Deserted

Usually Ul. Szeroka is bustling with people going about buying their wares. This photo was taken 2 days ago on the morning of 11th November (a public holiday). Completely empty...like a ghost town!!

An Unusual Bus Stop!

A few days ago we had the amusing post reflecting some of the strange customs here in Poland (being accused of being a shoplifter just because I didn't have a basket!). Well, today we have an equally absurd post.

Yesterday, we took a public bus from Toruń up north to Łysomice. All was going well...when suddenly the driver pulled into a local petrol station, parked the bus...and suddenly jumped out. No explanation was given to the bewildered passengers. After a few minutes he emerged from the shop. The reason for this sudden stop? The driver had simply wanted to buy a pack of cigarrettes!!
